Assisting in Career Transition

"The Minnesota Dislocated Worker Program assists workers in finding new jobs as quickly as possible. Our goal is getting workers back to work into jobs comparable to those that were lost."

— Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Developmentt

"I want you to know my job search has come to a conclusion for now. I accepted a position that is a good learning opportunity for me, and only a mile from home! I really appreciate the support and encouragement you provided throughout my search. Your suggestions were of great value as I navigated through territory that was relatively new to me. Thanks for your help. If I decide this isn't for me down the line, I will have the tools to search again, thanks to your counsel and many workshops, etc.!"

Dislocated Worker Program Services

Registration Session (Orientation/Intake)

At or near the time of layoff, our staff meets with you to acquaint you with services available to you. These sessions provide answers to pressing questions and job loss issues in order to get you quickly enrolled in the program.

Assessment

Together you and your counselor will assess what services you need to assist you in preparing for your next job. Your counselor will help you assess your goals, interests, skills, education, and other aspects in order to arrange services and set the stage for a successful job search.

Individual Employment Plan (IEP)

You will meet with your career development facilitator to discuss career goals and develop your employment plan. The IEP charts a path toward your career goal. It is a document to be updated as needs change during the project.

Job Search Preparation Workshops

Our workshops cover key topics such as: career assessment, job search, resume development, interview preparation, and mature worker strategies. We offer a Job Club for networking, and support.

RETRAINING SERVICES

Adult Basic Education

If you need to upgrade reading, writing, math or study skills, or complete high school education by earning a GED, our staff will assist you in finding resources to meet these goals.

Training Services

Our Dislocated Worker Program pays for tuition, books and supplies for approved training courses. You will work with your counselor to assess training needs, find training programs and research financial aid grants to complement project funding.

Computer Software Skills

Job Partners pays for computer training such as introductory to intermediate levels in Keyboarding, Windows, Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint.

On-the-Job Training (OJT)

Through this avenue, our program reimburses employers for part of a new employee's wages during a designated training period for a new job. Our Employment Division must first establish an OJT contract with the employer.

Customized Training

Our Dislocated Worker Program can fund training designed for you to learn specific skills. This training is short-term, industry-specific and targeted to meet employer needs. Examples include Office Assistant, Blueprint Reading, Truck Driver Training, Forklift Certification, or Six Sigma.
